The Red Light District, or De Wallen, is one of Amsterdam’s oldest and most iconic neighborhoods. Known for its legal sex work and illuminated red windows, it’s also steeped in history, with beautiful canals, centuries-old buildings, and charming cobblestone alleys. While the area draws curiosity for its adult-themed attractions, it also houses cultural sites like the Oude Kerk (Old Church), the Museum of Prostitution, and numerous pubs, restaurants, and boutiques. Visitors can learn about the city’s liberal approach to vice, as well as the social and legal aspects of the sex industry. The district is busiest in the evening, when tourists flock to the narrow streets. While it may not be for everyone, it’s undeniably part of Amsterdam’s open-minded spirit. Walking tours are available for a more respectful and educational experience. Photography of workers is strictly prohibited.
